{"id":1643,"date":"2018-11-28T14:42:15","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T14:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/?p=1643"},"modified":"2020-05-15T12:34:21","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T12:34:21","slug":"sentiment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/sentiment\/","title":{"rendered":"Sentiment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sentiment is defined within the investment community as investor attitude toward a broad market or asset class.\u00a0 Following sentiment can be a useful endeavor as a component of risk assessment.\u00a0 Growing bullishness can help investments rise but overly optimistic attitudes often occur near market peaks.\u00a0 On the opposite side, bearish attitudes can pressure markets lower, but overly pessimistic or fearful actions can wash out those sellers to set the stage for a recovery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sentiment can be measured a number of ways, but most fall under the categories of investor perception surveys or detection of their actual actions.\u00a0 Surveys can be verbal or online and generally reflect what responders think of the market in an upcoming time frame.\u00a0 Responders may or may not have acted on their beliefs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/ExcessiveOpinion.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1646 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/ExcessiveOpinion.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1044\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/ExcessiveOpinion.png 1044w, https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/ExcessiveOpinion-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/ExcessiveOpinion-768x391.png 768w, https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/ExcessiveOpinion-1024x521.png 1024w, https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/ExcessiveOpinion-900x458.png 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1044px) 100vw, 1044px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Above is an example of a survey by the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII).\u00a0 The scale to the right of the survey (lower pane), displays the percentage of the responders with a bullish outlook for the S&amp;P 500 Index over the subsequent six months.\u00a0 \u00a0Notice the survey number tends to track the movements of the stock market.\u00a0 Human nature is such that what is happening now tends to heavily influence perceptions of the future \u2013 if it\u2019s bad now, then it will be bad or worse in the future.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Herd mentality can provide the fuel to a rally or sell-off as people\u2019s actions are a natural by-product of their thoughts.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At extremes, the intensity tends to mark turning zones.\u00a0 Therefore, assessing sentiment can be useful as a contrary indicator but only after determining what qualifies as an extreme.\u00a0 In the chart above, zones of Excessive Optimism and Excessive Pessimism have been marked.\u00a0 Excessive optimism has been a worthwhile warning prior to major and minor peaks or at least stagnation.\u00a0 Excessive pessimism tends to be seen near lows.\u00a0 Not all market peaks and bottoms are accompanied by sentiment extremes using the AAII survey but when extremes show up, this information may play a role in portfolio adjustment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As noted, surveys convey investor perceptions but as the saying goes, \u201cactions speak louder than words\u201d.\u00a0 There are numerous ways to detect sentiment derived from actions taken by investors.\u00a0 The options market often attracts speculators looking to leverage their ideas of bullish outlooks by way of buying call options or bearish outlooks with buying put options.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1647 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/PutCallBullBear.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1719\" height=\"955\" srcset=\"https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/PutCallBullBear.png 1719w, https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/PutCallBullBear-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/PutCallBullBear-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/PutCallBullBear-1024x569.png 1024w, https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/PutCallBullBear-900x500.png 900w, https:\/\/investspectrum.com\/uma\/wp-content\/uploads\/PutCallBullBear-1280x711.png 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1719px) 100vw, 1719px\" \/>Created with TradeStation. \u00a9 TradeStation Technologies, Inc.
